Although there is no "typical" Breakthrough student, nor is there a formula for admitting students, all students work hard, contribute to the Breakthrough community, and benefit from the unique opportunities the program offers. In each new class of sixth grade students, there will be students who have earned A's and students who have failed a class or two; there will be students who have been identified as gifted and students who are struggling in regular-level classes; some of our students will already be viewed as leaders while many others will be embarrassed to raise their hands in class. However, while there is tremendous diversity in academic achievement, ethnicity, socio-economic status, and other factors, all Breakthrough students share a genuine love of learning and have demonstrated personal and educational promise that might be enhanced through a Breakthrough experience. This motivation and potential is expressed by the student him/herself or by a parent/guardian or teacher in the application of each student who is selected. Although most Breakthrough students will admit that the program requires hard work and commitment, they will all tell you how rewarding, worthwhile, and enjoyable the program is.
The school-year program typically involves tutoring and extra help outside the classroom. The six-week summer program consists of students:
- Taking morning courses offered in writing through literature, mathematics, sciences, and history, and two afternoon elective class ranging from Indian culture to Cincinnati baseball history to web design. Classes consist of four to eight students per class, enabling hands-on learning to take place.
- Participating in various field trips and special events (past trips have included visits to, The Union Terminal History Museum, local colleges and universities, and canoeing on the Little Miami River).
- Completing approximately one to two hours of homework per night.
- Participating and leading in parent conferences.
